An Organically Styled Garden Design, St John’s Wood North London
The brief was for ‘a contemporary space with an organic feel’ that could accommodate a sun-lounging area, sitting for 10/15 people, a dining area for 4/6 people and a shed. Improving the view from the living room – an old concrete staircase – also ranked high in the list of priorities.
We overcame the double challenge of a sloppy site and fitting the various areas within the existing 6m x 10m space by using gradually stepping platforms along the garden’s diagonal. The new layout made replacing the old concrete staircase by a lovely waterfall feature possible, the latter acting as a focal point from the living room.
The hardwood capped retaining wall provides informal sitting, while a table can be added to the far end platform for dinner parties.
Blond Iroko fencing, chocolate Ipe decking, unfilled travertine and exposed brickwork bring in the organic feel giving the space a warm and welcoming feel
